Whenever we hear a sound, there is always some object or part of an object that is vibrating.\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\nFor example, the string of a guitar, the membrane of a drum, the metal body of a bell, the air column inside a flute, and the vocal cords in our throat vibrate to produce sound.\n<\/p>\n\n<h2>Vibration<\/h2>\n\n<p>\nVibration is the periodic to and fro motion of an object about its mean position.\n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center; font-size:1.2em;\">\n<strong>Vibration = Periodic to and fro motion<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\nWhen an object vibrates, it moves repeatedly on both sides of its normal or mean position. This motion produces sound.\n<\/p>\n\n<h2>Example of Vibration<\/h2>\n\n<p>\nWhen a stretched rubber band is plucked, it starts moving rapidly to and fro. This rapid motion is called vibration.\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\nAs long as the rubber band vibrates, sound is produced. The dotted line represents the mean position of the string. When the string is plucked, it moves to and fro about this mean position.\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\nThis repeated to and fro motion is called vibration. Due to these vibrations, sound waves are produced and travel through the surrounding medium.\n<\/p>\n\n<h2>Mean Position<\/h2>\n\n<p>\nThe mean position is the normal or central position of a vibrating object when it is at rest.\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\nDuring vibration, the object moves on both sides of this mean position.\n<\/p>\n\n<h2>Source of Sound<\/h2>\n\n<p>\nThe object that produces sound is called the <strong>source of sound<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center; font-size:1.2em;\">\n<strong>Source of sound = Object that produces sound<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\nEvery sound has a source.
